Frequently asked questions

How do I measure the square footage of a room?

Measure the length and width in feet and multiply them. A 12 by 14 foot room is 168 square feet. For L-shaped rooms, split the room into two rectangles, measure each and add them, or use the L-shape option to subtract the cutout.

How much paint do I need?

A gallon of paint covers roughly 350 to 400 square feet per coat. Wall area is the room perimeter times the wall height, minus large windows and doors. Most rooms need two coats, so double the area before dividing by coverage.

How much extra flooring should I buy?

Buy about 5% to 10% more than the floor area for cuts and waste, and closer to 15% for diagonal layouts or patterned tile. Keeping a spare box from the same lot also helps with future repairs.

Does square footage include garages and basements?

In listings, finished living area usually excludes garages and unfinished basements. Add them here if you are estimating paint or flooring for those spaces, but leave them out when you compare your home with average living area.

Can I save my rooms?

Yes. Save keeps your rooms and settings in this browser on this device, with no account needed.
